What cars out there use 93 octane? This is the only that I know of and it’s at the halfway point between Athens Ohio and Columbus Ohio. So it’s a good ways from where I live. I also took a horribly bad photo of two long wheel base 7 series cars driving together.

Kinja'd!!!

Was glad to get out of Columbus last night. Road raging lunatic followed me for three miles and then got out of his pickup and approached my car screaming and yelling. He changed his mind when he saw my cousin and I reach for our “insurance packages”. Bugs me because I didn’t have an escape route I was blocked in with other traffic and the car behind had piled up right on my bumper. Another reason I dislike big cities.

93? It’s standard for the Fiat...

...with a tune for 93 octane fuel....

My Mini gets 93 at every fill up. That’s what we get for Premium here in New England. Sometimes I even fill it with some 94 octane ethanol free gas from the station by the lake.

AFAIK there’s not a single car that was sold in the US that requires it, because there are parts of the country that it’s unavailable, but there are some cars here and there that really want it .

Generally high specific output turbocharged engines are what recommend it.

Is there any reason you wouldn’t run it in a car? I put 91 in mine because that’s factory recommended, wasn’t sure if 93 would be bad for it.

Cost, that’s about it. You’re not going to damage anything running 93, and the engine will generally run fine on higher octanes than it’s designed for, it’s lower where there’s problems .

I wonder if I should try a tank in my F30. But the whole concept of adding ethanol to boost the octane... I'm already visualizing the drop in economy. Maybe my next tank to flush out the Sta-Bil.

93 is VERY common where I live (Western NY) and I get the best mileage and power with it in my 2015 Mazda 3.

So, the idea is supposed to be that it’s within the ethanol limits regardless of how much octane it’s rated for.

(I have heard of stations selling rotgut gas with much higher percentages of ethanol to get the octane up enough, though...)

They don’t offer 91 in Georgia or South Carolina. It’s 87, 89, and 93. What you’re paying for 91 is what I paid for 93 last night.

93 is generally all we have for premium here in NC.  I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a 91 pump locally.  I wish all gas stations would get rid of mid-grade.  Nobody really needs 89 - could replace the 89 pumps with E85.

Then what would FCA cars us? Charger, Challenger, & 300 have a version that runs on midgrade.

the price difference between 91 and 93 is is usually less than 5 cents per gallon. So I put 93 in the M3.

Well thing is the 91 at some stations up here (specifically Esso and Shell) is ethanol-free. I notice a drop in economy when I try 87 or 89 in my Sol and F30 respectively for their bare minimums , but this could be a combo of ethanol content and power loss.

All turboed VW’s up until their newest generation of engines have recommended 93 octane. And when I say recommended, remember it’s a Volkswagen, you better listen to what zee Germans tell you to do or else das auto = ka putt

89 is not an octane in a tank - it’s a mixture of the 87 and premium (91 or 93, depending on area)

Literally costs a button and a mixing plenum to offer, so they still offer it.

My GX actually runs best on 89.  87 I can feel light knock uphill, 89 I can’t, so I don’t bother with 93

Just drove across Ohio Sunday. All the stations on the tollway are like that. It’s nice since the GTI only calls for 91 so a bit cheaper. M ost places I run 93 because I’m not putting 89 in there.

The closer to sea level, generally the higher the octane of gas. Nature of the beast.

Hard to find 93 in Colorado, but low lying areas generally have it.  Has to do with air density

We have a station near me that sells 100 octane “race gas” on one pump only.  The button for it is a checkered flag. I would hesitate to use it though because it sits for so long.

Really? I’d imagine the performance gulf between 87 and 89 is minuscule .

That’s what we get for Premium here in SELECTED PORTIONS of New England.

Fixed that for you.

Maine sometimes likes to stupidly pretend we are California. In 2009, when the E10 mandate went into effect ALL stations in the state switched to 91 PON. Every last one. It was highly frustrating for me, as the car I had at the time was designed from the factory for 93 PON. 91 was an okay substitute at reduced power.

Now almost a decade later, 93 PON is starting to show up again at some stations. The distribution has been growing in the last couple of years, but a significant portion of places still only have 91.

I only run 93 in my bike and Magnum.  But here in Michigan, we actually have good fuel lol.  I was surprised when we drove Rt. 66 just how rare 93 was!

Sunoco is really the only brand I’ve ever seen offering 91. Every other station is 87,89,93. I normally get 93, since Volvo recommends 91 (and it’s definitely not worth it to fill half with 89 and half with 93). When I had a nearby Sunoco I did normally get the 91 there, but even then there’s barely any savings vs. 93.

stock 2.0.  Dealer recommended premium.  I tested it over multiple tanks on road trips.  I can squeak out 35-50 more miles per tank.  It’s not a lot more, but that’s a pretty small tank.

With 92 or 93 being the only premium option here i just have gotten into the habit of popping whatever the farthest, highest number is.

Course my cars just say "Premium unleaded fuel required"

I’ve usually had better results from 91 around here as it’s generally no ethanol, versus the 93 which is generally ethanol.

I can tell the difference. On a smooth vehicle like the GX you really notice when the engine starts vibrating in a weird  way. Above 89, no difference
